Particularly in how easily the government just gives up afterwards. What else can I say about this movie? The ending is, honestly, kind of awful. And perhaps it's not even that they were bad, but the movie put them in situations where they're gonna look like terrible actors. And, again, I hate to pile on kids who, obviously, didn't have a lot of experience, but they were really bad in some scenes. I mean, I get it, they're young and they're not as experienced as, literally, everyone else in the entire cast, but there's still some really cringe-worthy scenes where their delivery is just awful. The acting is also wildly inconsistent, at least from the children's parts. When the Rotten Tomatoes said that this was a slightly dull affair, boy, they weren't kidding. And it's not like it gets much better after the kids start showing their changes. The first chunk of the film is so damn lifeless and uninteresting that I could have shut this off midway through and it wouldn't have bothered me in the slightest. I think the biggest sin this film commits is the fact that, quite frankly, it's quite boring. It's goofy and stupid, but it is what it is. There's some attempt at, what the time would have been, some topical commentary with the FBI getting involved and believing this family to be part of some sort of terrorist cell. I think you'll have problems even if you did pay attention. If you weren't paying attention, you would be fucked since you wouldn't be able to figure out what the whole purpose of this thing is.
Again, they tell you, quite literally, at the beginning and that's about it. Once the Mimzy is in Emma's hand, and the kids start getting these powers, there's no explanation why this Mimzy is important and what its real purpose is. They try to explain it, but they do such a shit job at following up on it. I think part of the problem is the fact that I really have no clue what the last Mimzy was and what the fuck was its actual purpose. But then, in a hurried climax, they pretty much solve everything.
A large chunk of it feels like exposition, like they're building this franchise and this is only the first installment. If I can be honest with you, ladies and gents, I didn't find this to be a very good movie. I mean he has these strange dreams where he sees the same mandalas that Noah ends up drawing and his mystic girlfriend (Hahn) helps convince him to help the kids, but that's about it as a character development. His reason to exist is to help Noah and Emma, he doesn't have a real discernible personality. He's Noah's science teacher and all that and he helps Noah and Emma in the climax, but I'm not really sure what his purpose is beyond that. And, to be honest, I don't even know what sort of role he was even meant to play here. I guess having Rainn Wilson (who at the time was part of the cast of the American version of The Office) was part of their attempt to bring in a more 'adult' audience to their film, but the fact of the matter is that he is not in here (nor is Kathryn Hahn) enough to make a real difference one way or the other. The answer to that question would be a resounding, unwavering no. But I digress, the point that I'm trying to make, or trying to ask rather, is if this film manages to bring these two different audiences together. The Muppets and Pixar are experts at bringing these two demos together in their films. I'm not saying you have to put in R-rated jokes in there, but at least have enough cleverness that at least people my age (or older) can sit there and be like 'ok, that was pretty funny'. And you have to make it appeal to the adults who have to take these children to watch these damn movies. You have to make it appeal to children, which is easy enough, for the most part. The point I'm trying to make is the fact that you have two make a film that appeals to two very different audiences with different tastes. That's obviously a bit of an exaggeration, but I think parts of it are true. The point is that making films is hard, making good films even harder and making good kids' films is damn near impossible. Films are hard to make, I've never been a person who will ever say that a film is easy to make, even though there's people like Adam Sandler and his group of douchebags that do whatever they can to make a mockery of the people who actually put in the effort without reaching the same level of success as he has.
